Mauna Kea is Earth’s highest mountain measured from the sea floor. Indeed there are 13 astronomical observatories positioned on high for astronomers and enthusiasts to gaze deep into outer space .
TOUR DEPARTS KONA from your place of stay and wisks you away to Mauna Kea via Saddle Road-the main pass connecting both sides of the Big Island. This drive traverses enough land to really get a sense of the multiple climate zones our island is known for. Upon reaching the 13K summit, both east and west sides of the Big Island will be in view. Wonder at the spectacular sun set from high above the cloud line and notice the shadow effect that falls on the island’s east side. Take a deep breath as this is arguably the cleanest air on Earth. Drive back down to the 9K level ranger station for a star gazing gathering as night falls. Cruise back via similar route to your place of stay awestruck, cozy (warm coats included) & stomachs full (as tour includes savory chicken or vegetable stew & crackers, cookies). Departs between 1:30pm-2:30pm and lasts full 8 hr day... a day not soon forgotten. Call My Tour Hawaii for pickup location.

Island of Molokai
Kalaupapa National Historic Park
The primary story being told at Kalaupapa National Historical Park is one of forced isolation from 1866 until 1969 of people from Hawai'i
afflicted with Hansen's disease (leprosy) to the remote northern
Kalaupapa peninsula on the island of Molokai.
Kalaupapa serves as a reminder of a nation in crisis when Hawaiian
people were exposed to diseases for which they had no immunities.
Options for preventing the spread of contagious diseases were few.
Isolation for leprosy seemed like the best solution but came at a high
personal price.
Kalaupapa, once a community in isolation, now serves as a place for
education and contemplation. It is a place where many families in
Hawai'i can reconnect with a grandparent or relative once considered
"lost". It is a place where past suffering has given way to personal
pride about accomplishments made in the face of great adversity. It is a
place where we can reconsider our responses to people with disfiguring
disabilities or illnesses. It is a place where the land has the power
to heal - because of its human history, natural history and stunning
physical beauty.
The park is open 365 days each year. There are no opening and closing
hours due to the restricted visitation and active Kalaupapa community of
people. Commercial tours operate Monday through Saturday, except
Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Years Day.
Kalaupapa National Historical Park is administered in cooperation with
several Hawai'i state agencies. PERSONS WISHING TO VISIT THE PARK MUST
PREARRANGE A TOUR. ACCESS TO THE PARK
WILL BE DENIED TO ANYONE WHO HAS NOT MADE PRIOR ARRANGEMENTS. The commercial tour company arranges the permit for their
customers. NO CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 16 YEARS OF AGE ARE ALLOWED TO
ENTER KALAUPAPA. Reservations are required for commercial tours of the
settlement, mule rides on the trail and air flights. Keep in mind Kalaupapa is a remote sea level peninsula set below the tallest sea cliffs on Earth. It is accessible to visitors by small airplane transport (Iolani Air) or pack mules down a switchback trail.
